Men’s and women’s tennis fall in conference tournament
Biola’s tennis teams competed in the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament on April 18 and 19 in Indian Wells, California. The men’s team bowed out of the tournament in a quarterfinal loss to the Lewis-Clark State College Warriors, while the women’s team won their quarterfinal match against Westmont College, but lost their semifinal meeting with San Diego Christian College.
The fourth-seeded men got off to a hot start in their quarterfinal matchup, winning two of three doubles matches. The Warriors’ duo of senior Jeff Su and junior Ignacio Salom proved vital to the Warriors’ success, beating the Biola pair of freshman Derek James and junior Lucas Lee in their doubles match.
Su and Salom also won their singles matches, beating Lee and James, respectively. The Warriors were able to add two more points to win the match, clinching the 5-2 win for Lewis-Clark.
The Eagles women’s tennis, also fourth-seeded, started well against the Westmont Warriors by winning two of three doubles matches. Biola seniors Madeline Heer and Kelsey Post bounced back from their doubles loss by each winning their singles matches in straight-sets, with Heer earning Biola’s match-clinching point, giving the Eagles the 5-2 win.
The Eagle women could not match up with the top-seeded San Diego Christian Hawks, falling 5-2. The Hawks took an early 2-1 lead during the doubles matches, and their victory never looked in doubt, as they won the first three singles matches in straight sets. Biola freshman Lauren Lee earned the Eagles a consolation point, sweeping her opponent on the No. 3 court.
