BDS campaign calls for boycott against Israel

BDS campaign inspired by boycott movement against South African apartheid.  |

Nonviolent resistance is the only way to successfully end Israeli occupation of Palestinian land in the West Bank and pressure those in power to reject businesses profiting from apartheid.

Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions

Just as the Anti-Apartheid Movement helped bring down South African apartheid, citizens should join Palestinians boycotting the products sold by companies profiting off war and ethnic cleansing. It is why I support the boycott, divestment and sanctions or BDS movement that calls for the end of the military occupation and colonization of the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza strip.

The Palestinian Civil Society in 2005 started the BDS movement and the Palestinian BDS National Committee currently coordinates the campaign. According to the BDS Movement website, over “170 Palestinian political parties, organizations, trade unions and movements” have endorsed the campaign to divest from Israel.

No Defense

Compared to the technologically sophisticated and well armed Israeli Defense Forces, the Palestinians have nothing. Palestinians have no armed forces to defend themselves from from IDF tanks or armored personnel carriers. The Palestinians have no air force to defend schools and homes from F-16 fighter jets that regularly bomb and kill women and children in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. The journalist Max Blumenthal provides a grueling account of Operation Protective Edge — a 51 day war that left over 2,200 people dead. There is no powerful lobbying group or presidential candidate willing to defend the Palestinians.

Companies and governments need to divest from corporations that profit off Israel’s military occupation. These companies include Caterpillar and Hyundai, which supply the Israeli government with equipment to illegally bulldoze Palestinian homes for Israeli settlements. Citizens must also boycott products such as Ahava cosmetics and Eden Springs bottled water that are manufactured by companies that support the occupation. Citizens must also pressure their government to place sanctions on Israel for violations of international law.

Stop Sending Aid

As Americans, we must pressure our government to stop sending military aid to Israel. This relationship is based on military and geopolitical importance and has profoundly benefited the military-industrial complex. Defense companies including Raytheon and Lockheed Martin make billions selling fighter jets and weapons to the Israeli military. The Israeli military is one of the largest consumers of American weapons.

These companies are complicit in the oppression of Israeli arabs and the Palestinian people and need to be sanctioned. For companies like G4S, who sell security technologies to Israeli prisons, business is just business.

Scholars and intellectuals such as Noam Chomsky and Ilan Pappe have spent decades calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and settler-colonialism. Their works have exposed the architecture of occupation and the history behind the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A significant backlash against the movement has already occurred. Journalists Zaid Jilani and Alex Emmons report in an article for The Intercept on how the U.K. and French government have started to outlaw public support for the movement.

Dedication to Freedom

All people dedicated to the struggle for the freedom and flourishing of humanity should partake in the BDS movement or at least try to learn about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Let's ignore the radical left wing radicals at the Chimes. Let's continue to support our only true friend in the Middle East, and that is Israel. It is the only real democracy there, and they deserve our full support. Let's continue to support big business that provides support to Israel by selling it goods and services and let us continue to arm Israel to the teeth so this little democracy can defend herself against the Undemocratic Arab countries all around her.

I wish Justin would be informed by reality and and a biblical world view rather than Leftist agitators like Chomsky . The Leftist magazine , The Nation, which has writers like Chomsky, will never talk about biblical prophecy or the relationship between God and Israel. I so wish that Justin would reject his Religion of Leftism and find a scholar at BIOLA , who could teach him a biblical world view. His bible is Rolling Stone, The Nation, and Mother Jones. And he often quotes their prophets like Noam Chomsky or their Messiah, Bernie Sanders.

Israel has the right to defend herself. She has been the target of missile attacks from Gaza for years and has every right to defend herself. Why pick on the only democracy in that part of the world ?

I wish that leftists like Justin, who go to Christian Colleges , would put their sacred texts like The Nation aside and see what the Bible has to say about some of these issues. Does Justin have a biblical world view ? Is that what inspires his politics and opinions ? Of course not !!

If you read his columns and his heroes, they all come from the far Left. He continually and unfairly attacks America with all his strength. He hates corporations. And he hates Capitalism. We live in a broken world and we are all sinners , we know that. There is no perfection on this Earth and even if the Socialist Bernie Sanders wins, that will not bring Nirvana but it might get your last year of college paid for.

Israel isn't our enemy, they are our friend. Even if The Nation doesn't like Israel if you look in your Bible, you will find that God loves Israel despite her imperfections. And remember in Genesis, where God says he will bless those that bless Israel. I encourage Biolans to reject the BD S movement, and support our only real friend, Israel. April 19, 2016

I'm just waiting for the article about calling for a revolution on campus...or maybe removing the B from Biola since it propagates religious intolerance by daring to stand for "Bible". April 20, 2016

Commenters, you have absolutely no idea the kind of courage it takes to write an article like this one. Justin has continually put forth content that he is passionate about, researched in, and believe it or not, informed by a Biblical worldview.

God forbid we take a stance against the illegal and unjust occupation of Palestine. God forbid we live out our call as believers to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly. You don't get to pick and choose who you do justice to based on whether or not they are a democracy. You do NOT get to ignore the countless men, women, and children slaughtered as a result of this occupation because of a literalist interpretation of the Old and New Covenants. Most importantly, you do not get to claim the name of Jesus Christ if you do not also follow His commandments to love and help the oppressed.

Also, enough with the potshots, Steve. Supporting the liberation of Palestine and a two-state solution does not make Justin an anti-semite and frankly, using that as an attack against him is lazy and cowardly. It must be convenient, to throw names at Justin without critically wrestling with the issues he brings up.

As for you, alum. Last I checked, the most important "revolution" this world has ever seen was brought about by a brown, socialist carpenter who challenged the status quo, and was seen as a radical leftist. Maybe there's something behind that. April 22, 2016

I must say that I am deeply saddened by this viewpoint put forth by the school that I used to attend. Justin, you have no idea what is really going on in Israel. Go live there on the Israeli side and experience what it is like to live in fear of terrorist attacks before you decide to judge Israel. I have lived there. Operation Protective Edge destroyed tunnels made by Hamas designed to infiltrate Israel and launch large scale attacks. Please research this. Satan seeks to destroy Israel and God's people and he is spreading lies to accomplish this. Please read your Bible and stop being blind to this hatred. God very clearly stated: I will bless those who bless you and I will curse those who curse you. This was not a conditional promise. God made a promise to Abraham a long time ago that He would give the land of Israel to his descendants as an everlasting covenant. It was one sided. If you look at covenants of the day (context), two people had to pass through the cut pieces when making a covenant. Only God passed through the animal pieces. That means that God would cut Himself in half if He ever went back on this promise. Paul continues this in Romans 11 where he states: "Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious. 12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!" Israel is very much a part of God's plan and the BDS movement is designed to thwart God's plans, simple as that. I encourage you to read these passages of Scripture that I have presented here and research all of the wars that Israel has gone through. Israel's very existence is a miracle. They have been surrounded on every side and yet have been victorious. This could only be an act of God. I was there during the 1st Gulf War when missiles fell on Israel and only 5 people were killed and 100 injured. Only one or two were killed directly as a result of the missile attacks. These were missiles designed to do large scale damage, make no mistake. Search your heart. As a believer, I know that God will lead you to the right choice. June 6, 2016

I have another good one for you to research. If you read the book of Esther or you know the book of Esther, you will remember that Haman sought to destroy the Jewish people but was unsuccessful. The festival of Purim resulted which was to commemorate this time for all generations. Research when the 1st Gulf War ended. : ) Saddam Hussein also sought to destroy Israel, did he not? Coincidence, I don't think so. June 6, 2016

In summary, I may be a literalist and yes I believe that God's word is true - every word of it but I also have the facts to back up my statements. I know that Israel is part of God's plan because I have seen it with my own eyes. You cannot ignore history. I encourage everyone in this discussion to research and see for themselves how Israel came to be and to take a look at current events and the numerous attacks that have been taking place since the 3rd intifada. Dare to see the situation from Israel's eyes. What do you have to lose? June 6, 2016

Here is a funny comment I saw in response to anti - BDS article. I thought it was PERFECT.

"Instead of fighting BDS, we should join them. Ban all computers using intel chips, ban devices using flash memory, ban devices using micro usb ports (all developed in Israel); ban all motorola products - and by extension, google, and ban facebook (two large tech companies with their largest foreign branches in Israel). See what happens after that."

In other words, do you really know what you are proposing when you say that people should join the BDS movement? Are you going to stop using your computer as a supporter of the BDS movement? How about your cellphone? Are you going to refuse medications and life saving treatments because they originated in Israel? Whose jobs are you costing when companies have to move out of the West Bank because of this movement?

Most importantly, who are you REALLY supporting when you support BDS? Who is behind this movement and what is their REAL agenda?

    Dear Justin,

It saddens me that you have taken the wrong side of history regarding Israel and the Palestinians. Let me ask you, how can Israel occupy their own land. There has been and never will be a Palestinian people. Did you know that the term Palestinian did not come into effect until the mid-60's when Yasser Arafat over night started calling the once Jordanian Arabs Palestinians. If you will check there are is no history or archaeological findings in all of Israel of a Palestinian people. In 135 AD, the Roman emperor Haddrian changed the name of Judea to Palestinia in order to wipe out the history of the Jewish people. The word Palestine is the Latanized version of Philistine and they were a sea faring people so they are not even indigenous to the land of Israel. There are no decendants of the Philistine people alive today.

This BDS movement is not of God but an act of anti-Semitism against the land and the people God calls the apple of His eye and could be considered as a curse as well according to Genesis 12:3. If you want to boycott Israel, then Justin then you will need to stop using the computer that you are reading this on, to using all USB flash drives, certain medicines etc, as all these are from Israel technology. Did you know that the chair that keeps Dr. Hawkins alive was developed in Israel yet he wants to boycott all Israel products. There is a lot of medical technology that the world uses because of Israel. So, if you want to boycott Israel, you will have to stop using practically everything, especially if you have a Dell computer, the owner of Dell is Jewish!

Justin, I recommend that you re-read the Old Testament and highlight every verse that says "the land I promised to your forefathers" and I am sure there will be a lot of them.

If you want to hold to your position that Israel is an occupier and to supporting BDS, may I recommend that you leave Biola and attend a secular state university where you can join the Muslim Student Association or Students for Justice in Palestine, because I am sure they will love to have another anti-Zionist join their ranks, because I can guarantee you that Biola will always remain a Christian Zionist university.
