Eagles fly past Corban

The men’s soccer team is advancing to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament for the first time since 2009, following their 3-1 win over the Corban University Warriors on Saturday night.

The two teams met at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. on a very cold night where temperatures hovered between 30-40 degrees. Despite the cold, Biola played red-hot the whole night, earning them their 15th win on the season, moving them to 15-4-1 overall.

Corban came out strong at first, playing aggressively and testing Biola’s senior goalkeeper, JT Addington, in the first five minutes of play. Biola quickly adapted, and responded in the next five minutes with two shots of their own as well as a corner kick.

Play then went back and forth for a while, as each team tried to get a feel for the other’s defenses. Corban cracked first, allowing senior midfielder Joey O’Keefe to score a goal for Biola off of a corner kick from freshman defender Kousei Mattox in the 35th minute. That concluded the scoring for the first half, but the goals picked up again in the second half.

Biola came out firing almost immediately, scoring their second goal in the 47th minute. Senior forward Stephen Tanquary did the honors this time, assisted by a combination of O’Keefe and Mattox.

Play got a bit dirty after that, with two yellow cards coming for each team. Then, in the 69th minute, a player from Corban got a red card and was sent off. The Warriors put the ball in Biola’s net within 40 seconds of the red card, pulling the score to 2-1. However, Biola took advantage of them being a man down and scored their third goal in the 77th minute, when O’Keefe came up big again, scoring off of an assist from senior defender Cristhian Aparicio.

The Eagles’ next match is yet to be announced, but the team will travel to Delray Beach, Fla. for the next round of NAIA  Tournament games set to begin on Nov. 30.
