The new AS senate held their first meeting on Tuesday afternoon, passing two in-house proposals and hearing one about a location change for the fall concert. Junior Laura Cook, AS vice president, also noted that she and the senate intend to hear proposals from students approximately once a month, a change from last year’s policy of twice a semester.

PASSED

  • The senate passed a proposal from junior Evan Tan, AS vice president of finances, requesting $2,006 to purchase two new Apple iMac computers, keyboards and Magic Mice for the AS president and the AS music and arts coordinator — a new position that was created after the AS social board was restructured earlier this year. The Student Missionary Union will be splitting the cost for the president’s computer, since he donated the presidential laptop to replace the previous laptop for the office assistants.

  • Senators passed another proposal requesting $300 to buy a 24” flat screen monitor and 1 TB external hard drive for the AS marketing and communications web and media manager to replace the old, smaller monitor and make accessing files easier. Senators agreed that a new monitor and external hard drive would help the department operate more efficiently.

“It’d be nice to give them something that would help them be more productive and more efficient,” said senior Dani Decena, off campus community senator.

PENDING

  • Senior Lauren Bailey, AS music and arts coordinator, requested $12,118 to help cover the costs of facilities for a location change for the fall concert. The concert was originally slated to take place in Chase Gymnasium on Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m., but the Gym will be unavailable for event services to begin setup until 6 p.m.

Because the school signed a contract with the visiting artist for a certain number of attendees, Metzger Lawn is the only alternate venue that can meet the contract requirements. Senators will take it back to their constituents this week before voting on the proposal next week.
