PASSED

  • Although senators had not voted on whether to approve a proposal last week from AS spirit events coordinator junior Ashley Nelson to fund a $649 Disneyland pass as the prize for the Red Sea competition, it was announced as the prize during Midnight Madness on Sunday night. The senators voted to pass it anyway.

“It said that even in [the proposal last week], her plan was to promote it at Midnight Madness. If we had read it, we would have voted on it last week,” senior AJ Periard, Off Campus Community senator, said.

  • Senators passed a proposal requesting $668.24 for “Alpherson” — a joint Christmas party between Alpha Hall and Emerson Hall that will take place on Dec. 7. According to sophomore Alpha East senator Nikki Garcia last week, the event will strengthen community between the two dorms. Funding will go toward food, activities and advertising.

  • The senate granted $1,000 of the requested $3,000 for the Biola Dive Club. Senators agreed that because it was the end of the semester, junior Biola Dive Club president Steven Lopez would have the option to request additional funding next semester after the spring budgets for each club are determined.

DENIED

  • The senate denied a request to change the name of the Coalition for Social Action to Kingdom Justice. Senators said that a number of constituents expressed the concern that the new name did not seem as professional and would not accurately reflect the brand of AS.

“It’s less business-like and a little more Christian-ese,” said sophomore Rebecca Gallacher, Alpha West senator.

  • A request for $1,000 to fund a university-wide Star Wars Club event was denied. Senators expressed a concern about a lack in attendance, because the event is scheduled to take place on Dec. 1, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. However, senators were receptive to the idea and voiced the hope that the event could be planned in the spring.

TABLED

  • A proposal requesting $384.57 for Blu-Ray players for Sigma Hall was tabled. Senators agreed that, although technology is changing, they would like to see whether Residential Facilities would be willing to fund the Blu-Ray players, either entirely or partially, before making a decision about the proposal. The senate also hoped to hear more feedback from residents.
