Men’s tennis swept at Riverside

Division I team proves too much to handle for the Eagles.  |  Chak Hee Lo / THE CHIMES

The rough start to 2018 continues for men’s tennis, as their counterparts from the University of California Riverside came out in full force on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Highlanders, fresh off a series of losses, bounced back in their home match against the Eagles with a score of 7-0.

Sweep in Singles, Disappointment in Doubles

The Eagles had a tough day on the court, as they could not win any of their 6 singles matches. In the first match of the day, senior Lucas Lee put up a good fight, falling just short in the first game’s 7-6 loss before getting blown out in the second game to lose the match. At the opposite end of the matches, freshman Logan Blair won 7-5 in the first of three games, but ultimately lost the match 2-1. Aside from his efforts, the rest of the Eagles did not come close to a win in any of the other singles matches.

Biola continued its struggles later in the day, falling 6-2 in all three doubles matches. Lee, Blair. and their doubles partners—seniors Phillip Westwood and Michael Vartuli, respectively—were shut out by Riverside’s strong doubles partnerships.

Tighter Matches to Come

Saturday’s result was not entirely unexpected as UCR holds status as a Division I athletics program. The Eagles will head to Chapman University in Irvine, Calif. on Feb. 13 looking for some stronger performances before heading back home to start their PacWest schedule against Point Loma Nazarene University on Feb. 17.
