Senators harken to four proposals

The Student Government Association had their second round of open proposals of the semester, as well as a discussion with assistant director of facilities management Beverley Cain.

In their conversation with Cain, the senators shared complaints from their constituents, including many centered around bathrooms in the apartments and dorms. From Thompson Hall, constituents wanted to know how often they were responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms. Cain shared how previously the bathrooms were cleaned on a monthly basis, but now receive cleaning once a semester because of budget cuts. Several dorms brought up the shower curtains being too short. Other dorms shared about mosquitos entering their rooms due to the breeding grounds in La Mirada and on campus. Senators also shared how thankful residents were for facilities management.

Executive director of Biolathon and sophomore cinema and media arts major Sierra Stoltzfus proposed for $3,631 to host the 12-hour dance marathon. However, with SGA’s new rules limiting large scale events with no club or department oversight the proposal will not be voted on next week.

PROPOSALS

Sophomore public relations major Samantha Sands, junior public relations major Hannah Bare and sophomore business marketing major Daniel Shen proposed for $1,805 to host an Operation Christmas Child packing party. The three proposed on behalf of 6th Street Public Relations and their client Samaritan’s Purse to fund a photobooth and hot chocolate bar. The event will take place on Nov. 16 from 5-7 p.m. in the Caf Banquet Room, with the goal of packing 200 boxes for children to receive Christmas presents.

SGA vice president of finance, technology and HR Keaton Kerr proposed for $7,600 to pay for New York Times newspapers for the remainder of this semester and all of next semester. This would fund 80 newspapers for each day. If the proposal passes, newspaper delivery would begin on Oct. 30.

SGA president Gregory Ambrose proposed for $10,000 for lighting and sound tiling additions to the Student Union Building. Ambrose hopes the improvements will show students SGA cares for them by making the space more enjoyable.

Ambrose also proposed for $495 to fund 1,000 students to attend a basketball game at Azusa Pacific University on Feb. 6. SGA will also consider free shuttle rides to APU for the game.
