The Eagles wrapped up a wild three-game series against the Vanguard University Lions with a split doubleheader at Eagles Diamond on April 29, losing the first game 10-8 and winning the second 16-6.

As a result, both teams finished the season with 19-10 records in the Golden State Athletic Conference and the structure of the upcoming tournament comes down to a makeup game between the Hope International University Royals and Westmont College Warriors on Monday, May 1.

If the Royals win, Biola will be tied for second place with Vanguard and enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed because of their winning record against the Lions.

On the flip side, if Westmont beats Hope International, the Eagles will share first place with the Lions and Royals for their first GSAC championship since 2005. However, they would become the No. 1 seed team due to their winning records against Vanguard and Hope International.

Similar to the series opener, the Eagles found themselves trailing the Lions early in the first game of the doubleheader. Although they showed signs of a comeback victory with a three-run ninth inning, Biola could not recover from a four-run first inning and a number of costly errors.

Biola took their revenge and remained in the running for the GSAC crown with a high-scoring victory in the game 2. Home runs from senior third baseman Sam Thorne, junior left fielder Trey Holly and senior right fielder Jeremy Barth pushed the Eagles to eight runs in the third inning and seven in the fourth.

Regardless of how Monday’s games turns out, the Eagles begin their run in the GSAC tournament on Sunday, May 7 in Atherton, Calif.
