The Eagles looked to snap a four-game losing streak in a doubleheader at Vanguard University on March 31. After dropping nine of their last twelve games, including two home losses to Vanguard, Biola earned a 6-5 victory over the No. 17 Lions in game one and lost game two 2-0 to move to 17-14-2 overall and 6-8 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Game one was highlighted by a complete game from Eagles’ sophomore pitcher Kaile Chavez. After allowing four runs in the first four innings, Chavez shut down the Lions’ offense, only allowing one run and three hits in the final three innings. Chavez held Vanguard to eight hits while Vanguard pitchers allowed 12 hits.

Chavez’ pitching opened the door for Biola’s offense to take the lead with a four-run fifth inning and a game-winning RBI single from senior infielder Maranda Galindo in the sixth inning. Freshman designated hitter Jay Perez finished game one going 3-4 with two RBI and one scored run.

Game two proved to be a pitchers duel as neither team scored until the bottom of the sixth inning. Eagles’ senior pitcher Kimmy Triolo allowed only two hits over five and a third innings pitched. Vanguard’s winning effort was led by freshman pitcher Courtney Thornhill who had a complete game with only five hits allowed and five strikeouts.

The sixth inning was the eventual downfall of the Eagles. Vanguard senior outfielder Summer Penner got an RBI with a sacrifice bunt, followed by an unearned run allowed by a fielding error from Galindo. With Biola unable to spark any offense in the seventh inning, the Lions secured the game two victory.

Biola’s next matchup is a non-conference doubleheader at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University starting at 2 p.m. April 6.
