High winds in Hemet, Calif. played a large factor in the Biola men’s golf team’s performance today, as they finished 10th out of 10 teams on day one of the California State Invitational.

The high note for the Eagles came in the form of sophomore Kyle McAbee, who shot a 74 for the round, only two strokes over par and seven strokes behind the leader. He sits in a tie for 17th position overall, and a quality round from him on day two could put him easily in the top 10.

Sophomore Dominic Ariondo finished second for Biola, tallying a total of 79, only seven strokes over par and the only Eagle besides McAbee to finish under 80. Ariondo sits in a tie for 36th with five other players.

Juniors Samuel Shih and Ben Crumley finished third and fourth respectively on Biola’s leaderboard, scoring 85 and 86.

Sophomore Austin Bishop brought up the rear for Biola and the field with an uncharacteristic 89 stroke finish. Bishop played an excellent season last year, as his approximately 76 stroke average spearheaded Biola’s efforts.

Biola may be in last place, but they sit only seven strokes back of ninth place Pomona-Pitzer. The Eagles take to the course again on Sept. 20 starting at 8 a.m.
