In their last non-league game before the women’s soccer team begins their Golden State Athletic Conference matchups, the Eagles bested the California Baptist University Lancers, who are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II PacWest Conference. Not only did the victory keep Biola undefeated with a 6-0 record, it gave them a taste of the level of competition they will soon face in the NCAA.

The Lancers quickly took the lead over the Eagles with a goal at 5:38. Although California Baptist maintained heavy and consistent offense, shooting a total of 16 shots through regulation, they were held to one goal by Biola’s phenomenal defense. The Lancers’ lead over Biola only lasted around 15 minutes as senior midfielder Jessie Burns scored her second goal of the season and tied the game at 21:17.

Even though California Baptist outshot the Eagles 10-3 in the second period, senior midfielder McKenna Marmelstein gave Biola the lead with her third goal of the season at 52:37. From there, the Eagles’ defense and freshman goalkeeper Christina Rodriquez battled against eight shots and kept the Lancers scoreless through the remainder of the game.

The Eagles hope to take their momentum into their upcoming conference play, starting with a match against the Arizona Christian University Firestorm on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
