With a 1-2 pitch in the sixth inning, sophomore utility player Anjie Amezquita hammered a single through center field, scoring the game-clinching run was senior third baseman Heather Hall in game one. However, in game two, the tables were turned.

Sophomore right handed pitcher Terri Van Dagens took the mound for the Eagles for game one in Saturday's Golden State Athletic Conference opener at Hope International University. Van Dagens’ outing lasted three innings on 52 pitches. In her three innings, Van Dagens only allowed one run on one hit while striking out a pair of Royal batters. Freshman pitcher/first baseman Kalie Chavez took over in relief of Van Dagens and pitched four innings. In relief, Chavez allowed one run on one hit and two walks.

Biola and Hope exchanged leads in the second, third and fourth innings until it was 1-2 Royals heading into the sixth inning with Anjie Amezquita at the plate. Amezquita took a 1-2 pitch and ripped it through center field, scoring senior third baseman Heather Hall from second base.

Two batters later senior catcher Bria Madrid, with the score tied two all, sacrificed to the pitcher and scored Amezquita from third base to take the lead and give the Eagles a 3-2 win.

The second game saw more offense for both teams. However, the two Eagle pitchers would struggle in the second game of the doubleheader. Van Dagans was pulled after the second inning after allowing three runs on five hits, raising her earned run average to a still astonishingly low 1.80. Chavez did not fare any better as she allowed four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings in relief to give the Royals all the runs they needed to take the second game of the doubleheader. Nevertheless, when Chavez allowed the runs, it proved critical. Royals teed off four runs in the sixth inning to break a three all tie.

Biola’s scored all three runs in the the top of the sixth. Freshman shortstop Andi Hormel scored the Eagles’ first run on a fielding error by the Royals. The second run came on a Madrid RBI single who scored Chavez. Coming in to pinch-hit, freshman third baseman Missy Poti knocked in the last Biola run on a single to right field, scoring Madrid.

Biola’s next doubleheader will be home against Antelope Valley on Tuesday, March 8 at 1p.m. and 3 p.m.
