Biola golf had their best tournament in the history of the program on Sept. 14 at the Firestorm Fall Invitational. The women’s team finished first overall and the men tied for second with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

A Top Place Finish

The women’s team pulled off the program’s first top place finish due in part to freshman Mychaela Graf, who finished the tournament first overall after shooting eight over par through the three rounds.

Arizona Christian held the lead by five strokes after the first round, but were not able to handle the pressure on the final round as the Eagles outshot them by nine strokes, seizing the lead.

“We were pretty confident about it actually,” Graf said. “After the first round we were like ‘we’re going to win this and we’re going to all play great tomorrow and then we’re going to come out on top’ and we did.”

A Personal Tie

The men’s team was led by freshman Austin Bishop. In Bishop’s first tournament for the Eagles he finished third, recording a score of three over par. Senior William Langworthy finished only one stroke behind Bishop, resulting in a personal tie for fourth on the leaderboard.

As a team, Biola finished behind the first place Arizona Christian University by 19 strokes. The last time the men’s team finished a tournament in second place was in 2010.

A Bright Future

The future looks bright for both the men’s and the women’s team as they are comprised of young players – on both teams, only three of the players are upperclassmen.

The teams will look to continue their success at the next tournament of the season on Sept. 28 at the Embry-Riddle Co-ed invite.
