The Biola softball team stretched their win streak to four on Feb. 28 after beating Arizona Christian University twice in their doubleheader.

Junior third baseman Heather Hall put Biola on the scoreboard in the fourth inning of the first game against Arizona Christian with a solo home run. The Eagles maintained their 1-0 lead until the sixth inning when a Firestorm error and single by freshman first baseman Selina Sherman extended their lead to 3-0. Junior center Bria Madrid finalized the victory with a two run home run in the final inning. Biola won 5-0.

The Eagles held the Firestorm to zero runs in the first game, thanks to senior right-handed pitcher Debra DePriest, who pitched a comeplete game shutout for Biola.

“Our pitching was on point,” said sophomore outfielder Kasey Hormel. “And our defense made every play that the pitchers pitched, so we kind of all had each other’s back.”

TAKING ADVANTAGE

The second game proved to be much closer for Firestorm. Biola started the game with an early two run lead, thanks to junior third baseman Hall and freshman third baseman Selina Sherlin who each batted in a runner. Arizona Christian answered with three runs of their own, earning a 3-2 lead after the first inning. The teams continued to exchange blows and after five innings, the Eagles found themselves down 6-7.

“They hit a few home runs,” said Hormel. “They came out to that second game more ready to hit and had I think a different mindset of approach.”

After a silent sixth inning, the Eagles took advantage of their last chance to win the game. Junior right handed pitcher Kendall Maddox gave Biola the lead with a three run home run. Hormel cushioned the lead with another home run for Biola. The Eagles won the game 10-7.

KEEPING FAITH

“We kept faith,” said Hormel. “Our coach called us up in the sixth inning, and we all sat and prayed real quick for for strength and wisdom and were like ‘We’re doing this,’ and we needed to have the pitcher’s backs and they had ours, so we came up clutch.”
