Ice cream is a favorite among all ages but comes in many alternative forms besides the generic scoop or cone. Take an adventurous leap and head to one of these local shops that will surely satisfy savory and sweet taste-buds during a study break or free time on the weekends.

1. Frostbites

Frostbites offers a variety of products to choose from. If you are in the mood for a fruity flavor, try a sorbet cream — frozen custard topped with italian ice. The sorbet also comes in different forms, including a sorbet shake that you can create unique flavor combinations with, such as peanut butter and mango. Other options include both sorbet and sorbet cream sodas. If you crave a full-flavored taste, try the frozen custard, a type of ice cream made with eggs for a rich and creamy consistency. One other food you can try is a crepe — a thin pancake made from wheat flour and filled with a combination of fruits, nuts or sauce and topped with ice cream .

2. Carmela Ice Cream

Fruity, chocolatey and savory, oh my! This gourmet ice cream shop hosts a smorgasbord of flavors to suit all palettes. Carmela has five permanent flavors — salted caramel, brown sugar vanilla bean, dark chocolate with cacao nibs, fresh mint with cacao nibs and lavender honey — alongside unusual flavors like raspberry rose sorbet, roasted sweet potato, earl grey tea, lemon verbena vanilla bean, brown butter sage and heirloom tomato sorbet. Reasonably priced at $3.75 for a single scoop, Carmela’s ice cream is well worth the farther, 28 mile drive from campus.

3. Inside SKUP

Inside SKUP in Fullerton allows customers to create their own ice cream sandwich from their various fresh-baked cookies and ice cream flavors. Try an atypical cookie flavor like thai coconut or captain crunch peanut butter, or popular flavors like Andes mint and s’more. Pair any one of these unique cookies with an uncommon ice cream flavor like thai tea, or choose a traditional flavor like cookie dough.

4. Cafe Mochilato

Experience a different taste and culture at Mochilato where you can find many different desserts made with mochi — Japanese pounded sticky rice — including mochi filled with ice cream. The cafe offers shaved ice topped with gelato and fruits such as strawberries, bananas or mangoes. In addition to mochi, the cafe also has assorted gelato flavors such as green tea and creme brulee, available in a cup or waffle cone.

5. Waffles n’ Cream

Mingle breakfast and dessert flavors at Waffles n’ Cream in Santa Fe Springs, a short drive from La Mirada. If you have a sweet tooth, try an oreo explosion — a waffle topped with Oreos, chocolate sprinkles, ice cream and whipped cream. If you desire a less sweet taste, try the Berry Heaven topped with mixed berries, granola, ice cream and whipped cream. Other waffle flavors with ice cream include the Rocky Mountain, Nutty Banana, Strawberry Supreme and Good Morning Special.

6. Afters

Afters invented a confection that made its way into other ice cream shops in the area — the milky bun, a donut with ice cream in the center. Choose from flavors such as churro, cookie monster, jasmine milk tea and almond cookie. If you want to take your creation to the next level, add a topping such as a cereal like cinnamon toast crunch, a chocolate candy like M&M’s or a fruity candy like gummy bears.
