Biola will launch its biggest fundraising campaign in its history with a concert on May 9 hosted at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

HISTORIC RELATIONS TO HOTEL

The concert will feature artists Josh Garrells, Phil Wickham and The Brilliance inside the hotel’s theater. The fundraising campaign that will launch with the night’s events will focus on building funds to help with student affordability, to build a new center for science, technology and health, to grow the athletic department through facilities and athletic scholarships, and to expand academic centers and extend Biola’s global reach. However, the ticket revenue will not contribute to the campaign but to the cost of the event, said Kira McCracken, assistant director of advancement communications.

The Ace Hotel is the current home of the “Jesus Saves” sign that once stood on top of Biola’s original downtown campus. Above the hotel’s theater is written, “Forever, O Lord, Thy Word is settled in heaven,” the same words inscribed over Biola’s old Sixth and Hope campus entry. These historic ties are why the Ace Hotel was the venue pick for the concert, McCracken said.

“It’s one of the most historic weekends in the life of this university,” McCracken said.

SUGGESTED ARTISTS CHOSEN

To decide which performers would best suit the event, administration obtained a list of suggested artists from Associated Students. Out of the top five options on the list, they were able to bring three of them to the concert, McCracken said.

“What is really awesome about this particular lineup is the fact that all three have performed at Biola in the last three years, and I think it is awesome to strengthen those relationships,” said Camryn Hudson, AS vice-president of events and programming. “We feel truly honored to have been included in this process of selection, and look forward to the concert on May 9.”

Student tickets cost $15 before May 1 and $20 after that date. There will also be bus transportation from Biola to the venue. The bus fare is provided by AS and included in the cost of the ticket.

After the concert, there will be a student-only party at the venue.
