The women’s soccer team suffered their second straight GSAC loss on Oct. 18 to Vanguard University. Vanguard scored both of their goals in the first half, resulting in a 2-0 lead for most of the game. The Eagles did not get onto the scoreboard until the last five minutes of the game, thanks to a goal from sophomore midfielder Jessie Burns. Vanguard beat Biola 2-1.

Vanguard’s first goal came 22 minutes into the game off a backdoor pass to an attacker that slipped past the defense. Their second goal came in the last three minutes of the half, when a shot deflected off of senior goalkeeper Briana Williams and was successfully rebounded and scored by Vanguard, giving Biola a two goal deficit to try to make up in the second.

“We didn’t really come out ready in the first half” said Burns. “I think we came out with a mindset not ready to win yet, but the second half we looked a lot better.”

The second half ended up better for the Eagles, who improved their three shots on goal in the first half to 10 in the second. With only five minutes left in the game, Biola found the back of the net after an unassisted goal by Burns.

“We were hungry for it at the end” said Burns. “We all were hungry to get a goal and we all worked together, and I couldn’t have done it without them but I was happy we finally got one.”

The Eagles now stand 11-3 this season including a 5-3 GSAC record. This marks the first back-to-back loss for Biola this season.

“I think we’re going to learn from our mistakes and definitely practice what we need to work on and come out ready to beat San Diego on Wednesday.” said Burns.

Biola plays San Diego Christian College at home on Oct 22. The Eagles look to break their two game losing streak as they play the Hawks, whose current record stands at 5-6-1 including a 3-4 GSAC record.
