A student was conned out of $100 to a stranger earlier this week, as the result of an off-campus scam, according to Campus Safety Chief John Ojeisekhoba. This incident marks the fourth in as many years of a student being conned out of money.

Campus Safety suspects that the incidents are connected to the same perpetrators, who appear to be targeting Biolans. Last year, a student was scammed out of $3,000 in a similar stunt.

The student was approached by a man who said he needed to buy medicine for his child. The student agreed to help, driving the man to St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton.

After removing $100 from an ATM, the student gave it to the man, who went inside and simply didn’t return.

With an incident in 2003, and one each year since 2010, Ojeisekhoba said he’s concerned for students’ safety.  Amounts students have been swindled from range from $80 to $3,000.

Not only did the student give the man money, but a ride — which is also dangerous. Ojeisekhoba warned that students ought to simply be careful.

“If a stranger approaches you, asking for money, just walk away,” he said.

These events generally happen off campus, in familiar locations, though it’s happened at Common Grounds before, Ojeisekhoba said.
