Men's soccer ties San Marcos
Men’s soccer played to a 1-1 draw against California State University, San Marcos on Wednesday night. The double-overtime thriller had Biola ahead early in the match with a goal from sophomore defender Joao Toscan.
Toscan took a sharp angle from the right side and scored off an assist from senior midfielder Tony Montalvo in the 22nd minute.
The Eagles’ lead lasted through the remainder of the first half, during which they were outshot 7-5 by the Cougars.
It was only three minutes into the second half, though, when San Marcos tied the game with a 48th-minute goal. The Eagles misplayed a cleared ball and the Cougars’ Tyler Spitznagel took advantage, beating Biola’s freshman goalkeeper Joshua Crichton, who had five saves on the match.
After being outshot 11-2 in the second half, the Eagles had all the opportunities in overtime, outshooting San Marcos 3-0. Freshman forward Stephen Tanquary had a strong shot stopped by a sliding Cougar defender to keep the game tied. Fellow freshman and midfielder Marshall Deogracia rocketed a shot off the crossbar that was then cleared by San Marcos defenders.
This match started off a six-game road trip for the Eagles with them next heading to Simpson University on Friday. Biola comes home on Oct. 4 against Arizona Christian University.
