A.S.: Senate Rundown
Senate Meeting: 10/09/07
At the AS Senate’s weekly Tuesday meetings senators give audience to parties requesting money, vote on pending proposals and discuss finances. Below is an outlined summary of the most recent senate meeting, which was held October 9.
NEW PROPOSALS (have yet to be voted on)
AfterDark Chapel (Joel Garman, AfterDark Coordinator)—$500 i. They want to hold one AfterDark on the lawn and offer hot drinks and snacks to attendees. They’re planning on October 24 ii. $225 for drinks, $175 for food, $25 for luminaries, $75 for set-up
Chapel Board—$3,500 or $15,000 i. $3,500 to bring in Phil Wickham or $15,000 for worship concert ii. The decision was put to the senate about which option they preferred.
New Centennial Banners(Paul Guerrero, alumnus, and Pete Menjares, vice provost for diversity leadership)—$500 i. Problem of lack of diversity on centennial banners around campus. ii. Plan is to get more pictures that show how Biola has become a more racially diverse campus.
VOTING (on proposals from the previous week) unless noted otherwise, all proposals passed in their full amount.
Social Justice Ministry—Planning an event called “Broken Bread Poverty Meal”—$200 PASSED
Yearbook Editor-in-Chief—Compensate staff for driving expenses—$100, PASSED
Block Apartments’ “Christmas Cruise”—$850 (original proposal was $1,500), PASSED
Sigma Improvements (Door stops, bulletin boards, DVD player)—$300, PASSED
Miscellaneous
- AS President Jared Gibo talked about changing the AS constitution: change VP of Service position to VP of Marketing and Communication
- Gibo believes the VP of Service is a very underutilized position and that it needs more definition: “Just a little restructuring of responsibilities,” Gibo said.

Note on new proposal #3: The amount is for $500, which is half of the cost of the banners (being split with the Centennial Team).

Cami, thanks for that clarification. I was wondering why a vice provost was coming to AS for money...and I am still wondering why. I think its a cool thing, but why didn't it come out of centennial's original budget that I assume they spent on all the other posters or other stuff on campus? It seems odd that 1 banner, and one that relates to diversity, needs extra money from the senate.

Matthew: As far as I know... The topic was raised in the Campus Issues folder, and somebody got in discussion with Jared about it. He talked with Centennial, to see if something could be done to address it. $500 is reportedly all Centennial has left in their "poster" budget. Jared [AS Pres] is the one who proposed to the senate, not the Vice Provost or Paul Guerrero...Paul is the one who brought up the subject, and Pete Menjares was involved in the discussion with too. The $1000 total would get 5 new posters that represent "the strides we've made towards becoming a more diverse university." [quote from the proposal] The reason money is being asked from the senate is because Centennial's budget is tapped...but I'm really not sure how it was decided to ask AS and not some other department for the other half of the funding.

Bradley- The chapel proposal was discussed that day at our All Staff meeting, not in the Senate meeting. It was a more a presentation of a possible proposal by some members of the University Chapel Board than us just discussing it. There was a whole article about it, which I'm sure you've seen by now..
We're not hiding anything...anyone can read the mintues from Senate meetings in the AS folder on Bubbs.
